Coffee connoisseurs: I have a grinder and a machine. Now what?
I was instructed to get a burr grinder and a maker. Now I have them, but I'm not sure about what kind of coffee to get. How do I tell if beans are already roasted? Does it make a difference? I have some beans that I bought a year ago; are they still good? See, I thought that the benefit of getting a grinder was that I could buy whole beans and they would last a lot longer than the pre-ground bags that I had been getting. Was I mistaken? Do beans go bad, too? What is the benefit of having a grinder?

Congrats, you're on the way to a great cup.
Whole beans don't stay fresh for a year but last longer than ground and will give you much better quality. The benefit of having a burr grinder is that the beans will burst with fresh flavor that starts evaporating within days of pre-ground beans.
ALL beans available from most stores are already roasted, although some people roast their own by buying green beans from specialty stores.
If you don't know what degree of roast you like (French Roast, Espresso, Vienna Roast etc) you need to find out by trying different kinds. You might go to a premium chain such as Peets, Seattle Coffee or Starbucks and find something like a 'starter kit' containing a few ounces of different beans and have a taste test. You'll need to experiment to find out what's best for you. Although some people buy supermarket brands I find them all inferior, but YOU'LL find out for yourself!
