How to make espresso?
Hi all. I got a great espresso machine for Christmas and am so excited but I have a silly, amature, question. Do you just use regular coffee beans? I bought "espresso beans" in a can and they are pretty good but they seem so finely ground. Is there a special grinder or something I need to use. Thanks for the help.
"Espresso" beans are the same as coffee beans; sometimes they are a blend of beans chosen for their complimentary properties. I use both single-origin and blended beans in my espresso machine.
The main variables in coffee are the grind size:
Coarse: Press pots, vacuum brewers and cold brews
Medium: Auto- or Manual drip
Fine: Espresso (machine or stove-top)
Super Fine: Turkish coffee
Most grinders can do coarse and medium, but espresso requires very precise grinds that need to vary from method and beans. My machine has over 80 settings and my espresso setting is near the finest it can go. I have a hand grinder for Turkish since that's even finer than the machine can do.
If you don't want to spend a lot on a grinder, I'd recommend buying espresso ground coffee in a sealed, vented bag in small sizes to keep it fresher. Of course nothing tastes like fresh roasted and ground.
