How to use a French Press
How do I make coffee grounds coarse?
I just bought a french press and read that I'll need to use COARSE coffee grinds otherwise they'll come through the filter.
I know having them ground by Starbucks is an option, but I don't want to do that. I only drink one cup/day so I want the beans to stay as fresh as possible for longer.
So, how do I do coarse? Does that mean I put the beans in the grinder and only grind them a little bit so that the grinds stay large?
An earlier answerer was correct to say that a blade grinder gives a less even grind. That means that some particles will be too small and some will be too big. Most of them will be just right.
I used to work as a coffee roaster. I had a blade grinder at home and a burr grinder in my lab at work. I had to grind a small amount of each roast to measure how darkly it was roasted using some specialized equipment. This was a course grind and I took some samples home with me. I brewed with a French press and I actually preferred the coffee that was ground with the blade grinder. Grinding immediately before brewing is the best thing to do to maximize aroma and flavor.
The particles that went through the screen on the press were small enough that they didn't adversely affect the taste or texture of the coffee. You can adjust the ratio of fine and course particles by adjusting the grind time. Letting the coffee sit in the hot water for a few minutes and then SLOWLY pushing the screen down will give good results.
