I understand your frustration completely. I, too, love writing in fantasy realms wherein I can't use modern day comparisons. My suggestion is using an online thesaurus (I love thesaurus.com). I prefer the online versions because you can continue to click on words until you find the perfect one. I've been saved a number of times by the suggestions the thesaurus has given me. Just one word of warning, be careful of overusing it. Some people tend to go wild, replacing words with others that aren't commonly used - you don't want your reader to have to drag out a thesaurus every time they come across a word they don't understand. Good luck!
